It’s interesting when people are decompressing from being under authority. I get asked sometimes when Rangering “Can I DO that?” Like I am the authority figurine or something. I explain my role and remind people that “You have Permission!” Then I ask them to wait a sec while I clear a perimeter. =D
I recall that my busiest time during one of my first shifts was sitting in the shade near Center Camp. Nothing rangerable had happened for the past four hours as we built social capital walking up and down in the dust of the streets of our city. I had met a ton of people, seen a ton of camps, had a great time…but hanging out in the shade relaxing…it all came to us. I answered more questions, helped people just sitting there. The seasoned Ranger I was with smiled and simply said…”see IT comes to you, you don’t have to go to IT…” I have been pondering how very very true that is for some time now.

I am DiverDave, I have been going to the ‘Gerlach Regional” since 2010 and Burning Virtually (Yep!) since 2007. I am a Technogeek and lover of SCUBA diving since I was a kid, thus the call sign DiverDave. I like to 1) Do Nothing or as little as possible to facilitate a mo’ awesome Burn for people I meet while wandering the dust and 2) Ask fun questions that make ya think. I have worked in the DMV as a Hottie both on Playa and ran the Virtual DMV over at BURN2. I am also one of three Burning Man Regional Reps to Second Life with the awesome mission of bringing Burning Culture to the whole dang world through the Second Life interface. Since I have been involved with Burning Man I have always identified myself as a facilitator and a mediator in one flavor or another. I went into my Alpha shifts with an open mind and the best piece of advice that I kept getting before the shifts from a bunch of seasoned Rangers was to “have fun.” Have FUN?” C’mon DiverDave you say! This is the decision point! I gotta have my protocols down! I gotta have my internal GPS working! Dear Gawd I gotta order a Utilikilt! I gotta know where my pad of paper is at all times! I gotta remember what Logic-B means! Ya know what? It is the best piece of advice you can get. Be loose, have fun. Enjoy everyone and build social capital. It all will follow from that.
